Lab 3 In the lab --- 1. Note the values of resistor and capacitor. 2. Connect circuit (a) and get data for charging and discharging ( using hand held timer ) 3. Get computer graphs for charging and discharging of circuit (a) 4. Get computer graphs for discharging of circuits (b), (c), (d). At home --- 1. Plot V vs. t for charging and discharging of circuit (a) 2. Plot I vs. t for discharging ( circuit (a) ). 3. Get the time constant from discharging computer graphs. (for all circuits) 4. Plot V vs. t on SEMI-LOG graph paper for discharging ( for all circuits, but on one graph paper. ) 5. find slope of line on semi-log graph and find time constant using the slope. 6. Find the equivalant capacitance for each circuit using the time constant from computer graph and from semi-log graph. Compare with given/calculated capacitance. Questions you might try answering --- 1. How do you expect the graph of I vs. t for a charging capacitor to look like ? Explain. 2. What can you infer about the rate of charging/discharging of the capacitor ? Can you explain why ? 3. This might be a little vauge but why does the graph on semi-log graph paper come out to be a straight line when the graph from the computer was a curve ??????
